Note that if you ONLY want to do a header request the 'GET' above needs to replaced with
'HEAD'
OLD:
$head = "GET ".$url_info['path']."?".$url_info['query'];
NEW:
$head = "HEAD ".$url_info['path']."?".$url_info['query'];
