Had some fun problems compiling PHP 4.2.2 statically into Apache 1.3.26. This may also work for DSO
as well. The error
/usr/bin/ld: warning -L: directory name (../modules/php4) does not exist
/usr/bin/ld: warning -L: directory name (../../modules/php4) does not exist
/usr/bin/ld: table of contents for archive: modules/php4/libmodphp4.a is out of date; rerun
ranlib(1) (can't load from it)
make: *** [dummy] Error 1
I kept hunting down solutions for the does not exist problem, when all I needed to do was run
'ranlib' on the src/modules/php4/libmodphp4.a file. It compiled like a dream after that.
Hope this helps. BTW, I also found that using the configure option --with-layout made custom
installations much easier. See --configure help for more info.
