Even though the latest version of GD (2.028) supports GIF (since the patent expired worldwide), the version of GD (2.023') bundled with PHP 4.3.8 does not support it. Compiling PHP with the latest version of GD is not possible, due to incompatibilities between the builtin GD and the official GD release.
