Looks like mysql deletes its sock file upon server start up and creates a new one thus breaking any
hard links by changing its mysql.sock inode number. If you're gonna hard link (because
soft/symbolic links will not see the true /var directory) it has to be each time right after server
startup. Either do it in rc.local or mysqld_safe script.
