It seems that this works better:
$string = str_replace("\\", "\", $string);
than this:
$string = stripslashes($string);
I have tested it with strings like: \, \\, \\\, \', \", \t, ', "
And everything works fine!
The code above works if:
magic_quotes_gpc off
