Naturally there's a performance tradeoff. But isn't that the point? Based on your
situation, decide the proper amount of tradeoff between performance and security.
Running a box nobody has physical access to but you, not even connected to the Internet? There
needn't even be a login system installed. Running a single, small server and a couple of
auxiliaries? Try a chroot installation. Hosting ten thousand clients on half a dozen mainframes?
Hire a team of professionals to maintain the systems around the clock. Paranoid beyond all reason?
Learn the hardware and write your own operating system and server software, so you can trust every
line of code.
