if you're stuck using a pre-4.10 version of php, this can do in a pinch (so you don't have
to change all of your code)
import_request_variables("gp", "foo_");
can be replaced with
extract($HTTP_GET_VARS, EXTR_PREFIX_ALL, "foo");
extract($HTTP_POST_VARS, EXTR_PREFIX_ALL, "foo");
