It seems the issue with $_SESSION being slow has been addressed. Accessing $_SESSION is just as fast
as any other superglobal array. It is serialized and written to disk only once at the end of the
request, not after each access as some of the previous comments seemed to imply. Some benchmarking
info for assigning values to both $_SESSION and $_GET a hundred thousand times or so:
$_SESSION: 0.380021095276
$_GET: 0.50522685051
