When installing PHP5 on Apache2 in a Windows environment, here is the quickest way to a clean
install:
1) Change the base install directory to C:\Program Files such that the Apache2 Windows installer
installs to C:\Program Files\Apache2
2) Extract the PHP5 .zip file into C:\Program Files\Apache2\php
3) Copy the php.ini-recommended file to C:\Program Files\Apache2 and rename it to php.ini
4) Add these lines to the apache2 httpd.conf file:
# PHP Support
LoadModule php5_module php/php5apache2.dll
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
5) Test the config and restart Apache2
You do not need to copy any files into the Windows directories. Apache2+PHP will run happily from
it's own directory.
I also sometimes install Apache to C:\Program Files\Apache2.0.50 so newer versions can be installed
in their own directories.
