When compiling mysql and mysqli on Linux, I have found that you need the tar.gz release, and not the
RPM version.
I don't know why, but it seems to only work with the tar.gz release.
I used this configure command (with other options too):
./configure --with-mysqli=/mysql-4.1.3/bin/mysql_config --with-mysql=/mysql-4.1.3
