It makes no mention of the use of that trailing "array" parameter, though Mr. Davey intuited it nicely. Based on my own code, I suspect Mr. Davey's code can be simplified slightly: array_multisort($volume, SORT_DESC, $edition, SORT_ASC, $arr); may work as: array_multisort($volume, SORT_DESC, $arr); No guarantees, but my similar needs and code worked fine with that simplification.
