I created a script that ran a uuencode, then a uudecode, testing their times.
<?php
$text = '...'; // 3000 Words generated by http://www.lipsum.com
$now = microtime();
$encoded = convert_uuencode($text);
$after_encode = microtime() - $now;
echo "It took $after_encode seconds to encode 3000 words.<br/>\n";
$now = microtime();
$encoded = convert_uuencode($encoded);
$after_decode = microtime() - $now;
echo "It took $after_decode seconds to decode 3000 words.<br/>\n";
?>
My results on Slackware 10, PHP 5.0.2, Apache 2.0.52, and Mozilla Firefox:
It took 0.000308 seconds to encode 3000 words.
It took 0.000399 seconds to decode 3000 words.
3000 words! It's quite fast. And check out these results:
It took 0.000781 seconds to encode 50 kilobytes.
It took 0.001076 seconds to decode 50 kilobytes.
