If the month is a string mktime seems to look good.
mktime(0,0,0,09,d,2004) works ok if d < = 30 , remember september has only 30 days.
But mktime(0,0,0,09,d,2004) behaves strange if d > 30, per example:
date( 'D', mktime(0,0,0,09,31,2004))
Wed
date( 'D',mktime(0,0,0,9,31,2004))
Fri
mktime(0,0,0,09,31,2004)
1072825200
mktime(0,0,0,9,31,2004)
1096581600
(mktime(0,0,0,9,31,2004)-(mktime(0,0,0,09,31,2004))/(60*60*24)
274.958333333
So take care of the string if the day is over the end of month
