<br /> is invalid HTML, and should not be used in any HTML pages. Any SGML parser will rightly interpret such a tag as <br>/>, and browsers have had to add special parsing rules just to deal with this nonsense. The HTML tag is <br>. Trying to halfheartedly make HTML websites forward compatible with XHTML by inserting loose slashes in random tags is not a good policy.
