I think the problem is that FAM sucks due to it's limited scope. It is only intended to keep a
GUI directory listing or file/directory representation updated, with the idea that GUI objects
should represent a 'live' state, including dynamic updates to a file's size. For
it's purpose, it works well.
The right way to make a general filesystem monitoring tool is very filesystem-specific, so doing it
'right' is not an easy task.
