The method transformToXML() returns the results as a string or boolean FALSE on failure.
Refer to xsl_xsltprocessor_transform_to_uri for a complete example.
If you change the last line of the example to:
$proc->transformToURI($xml, 'php://output');
then the translated results will be output instead of saved to a file.
You could achieve the same results this way with transformToXML():
echo $proc->transformToXML($xml);
