While trying to use the mail() function with windows XP, I could not connect to any SMTP server or
localhost. I kept getting the following warning:
PHP Warning: mail(): Failed to connect to mailserver at "smtp.itd.umich.edu" port 25,
verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() in
C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\htdocs\test.php on line 19
After about two days of trying to figure out what was wrong, I found out that McAfee was blocking
port 25. This might help others who have had the same probelm with the mail() function.
So if you can't get the mail() function to work, check your virus scan software or a firewall
(including windows firewall) and see if it is blocking port 25.
A good source for windows users for the mail function is http://forums.devside.net/viewtopic.php?t=518&start=0
