It appears that echo (or print) does not work with binary strings, so this is my workaround for
that:
$fp = tmpfile();
fwrite($fp, $binary_str);
rewind($fp);
fpassthru($fp);
fclose($fp);
Neither could I write the binary string to php://ouput.
