Anyway, after using trim, eregi_replace and everything, found that the actual code for the alleged whitespace was \xA0 - and was not being picked up by any regex filters such like [^a-z0-9] and also is not classed in [:space:]! i couldnt find a reference to this character on ASCII-hex lists as its quite high up - but if having similar difficulties try http://www.x-ways.net/winhex/index-m.html and download their software (free) to view your php/ text file etc - it worked very well (for me anyway)!!
