It appears that on Windows (XP, PHP Version 4.3.9) the __FILE__ constant can appear within a string.
So the following is valid:
require_once realpath('__FILE__/../include/config.php');
However, on Linux (Fedora 3, PHP Version 4.3.10) this will not work, you have to write:
require_once realpath(__FILE__ . '/../include/config.php');
