I have found an excellent server package for Windows that uses Apache, called Fireserv. I currently
use it for any testing work on my home computer. The control panel has a simple interface so that
anyone can use it - everything (and I mean everything) is automatic so all you have to do is place
you pages in the WWW root. It allows an alternative to IIS if you are using an operating system that
doesn't support it such as XP home edition.
Fireserv automatically installs PHP, CGI, Perl and MySQL with phpMyAdmin. Sadly it appears that the
software development has ceased so the latest version contains slightly outdated versions of the
above mentioned technologies. I have also discovered that the site that it originated from no longer
exists so I recommend searching the various download services (such as CNet's download.com) for
a copy.
I would recommend this package to pretty much anyone although I am not sure how it would cope in a
production environment although I would have thought it would work as well as IIS, if not better.
