If you're looking for functions to generate 128 bit uuid's, try the uuid PECL extension at
http://pecl.php.net/package/uuid.
It uses libuuid from ext2fstools, so I think it's only available on *nix, but provides the
following handy functions:
string uuid_create([int type])
int uuid_compare(string uuid1, string uuid2)
bool uuid_is_null(string uuid)
bool uuid_is_valid(string uuid)
int uuid_variant(string uuid)
int uuid_type(string uuid)
int uuid_time(string uuid)
string uuid_mac(string uuid)
