The comment regarding paths above is not really accurate. A better solution is
$_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME'].
More seriously, this function on my installation (4.3.8 on Linux/Apache 1.3) seems to just return
whatever it finds in the environment, not the user as whom the httpd process is running.
