For Windows users, the simplest way of getting all the parts required for PHP development installed
on a Windows box is to use the XAMPP package at www.apachefriends.org.
The package contains Apache, PHP, MySQL, Perl, and a bunch of other thingies that make developing on
a Windows host bearable, especially where the target host of one's efforts is a Unix host.
An especially good characteristic of XAMPP's installation is that it makes no alterations to
the Windows registry. Removing it is a matter of removing the directory containing XAMPP.
XAMPP is fully functional after installation. A user of XAMPP need not make any configuration
changes at all. On my box, I made a single change to the httpd.conf file to add a [directory] block
defining an additional directory accessable to Apache.
[disclaimer: I have no interest in the XAMPP project other than as a satisfied user].
