It looks to me dat ereg_replace is the same as str_replace, because when you use
<?php
$num = '4';
$string = "This string has four words.";
$string = str_replace('four', $num, $string);
echo $string;
?>
you get the same output as when you use
<?php
$num = '4';
$string = "This string has four words.";
$string = ereg_replace('four', $num, $string);
echo $string;
?>
