Problem:
OS: Windows XP; PHP: 5.0.4; php.ini: windows system dir.; Webserver: Apache 2
The error:
"PHP startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\php5\ext\php_exif.dll - the specified
module could not be found".
Solution:
It seems that php_exif.dll is dependent on php_mbstring.dll. So you need to enable php_mbstring.dll
BEFORE you enable php_exif.dll. The two entries in your php.ini file should be: (in that specific
order)
extension=php_mbstring.dll
extension=php_exif.dll
Other reasons that might be causing the problem:
1. You have the wrong path set for extension_dir in your php.ini.
2. The module isn't in the extension directory you specified.
3. Your php.ini file is not in the system directory in which case 1 & 2 won't matter. Run
phpinfo() to check that you have correctly set the extension_dir path. If the path isn't the
one you specified it is mostly likely that the php.ini file you are editing is not parsed.
4. You have more than one php.ini file which might be messing things up.
--------------------------------------------
Few sides notes:
If you are getting the error:
"Fatal error: Call to undefined function exif_imagetype() in C:\somefile.php on line
10000000", then you must enable php_exif.dll as specified above.
KEEP IN MIND: if for some reason you disable the extension
php_mbstring.dll make sure you also disable php_exif.dll otherwise the following will/might happen:
1. You will no longer be getting the error: "PHP startup: Unable to load dynamic library
'C:\php5\ext\php_exif.dll - the specified module could not be found" when trying to
re/start Apache.
2. On the down side, Apache won't re/start (despite you having a perfect php.ini file). As a
result you will most likely go crazy trying to fiqure out the problem, end up in mental institution
and be scared for life... now where are the damn doctors (walking through a very long hall :) ).
