I installed
mysql 4.0.xx and mysql 4.1.xx (mysql & mysqli) with
--with-mysql=/path/to/mysql4/
--with-mysql=/path/to/mysql4.1/bin/mysql_config
keep in mind don't use --with-embedded-mysqli !!
Its doesn't work if you just give mysqli the path where mysql_config is.
