After reading so many problems in installation under Windows systems in message boards over the last
few years, I'd thought I would help the newbies out by posting explicit steps I used to get
Apache 2.x (currently 2.0.54) and PHP 4.3.x (currently 4.3.11) working.
1) Get the software
Download all Apache and Php distributables. These are stored as ZIP files so make sure you got
Winzip handy to unzip it.
2) Unzip/extract the software into appropriate directories
Unzip Apache into C:\Apache
Put it in this directory instead of under Program Files to save some navigational efforts
when developing (trust me, you'll thank me for this).
Unzip Php into C:\php
3) Install Apache
Run the Apache setup program and choose typical configuration. Choose all default options.
After you install, make sure Apache is running. Go to your browser and type this in to verify:
http://localhost
If you see the Apache page come up, congrats. If not, you got some Apache related troubleshooting
to do. Do NOT proceed to the next step until you fix this.
4) Copy all Php Dlls to System32 directory
Copy DLLs in the following directories to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32 directory:
\php\dlls
\php\extensions
\php\sapi
Because some Php DLLs call other DLLs, by centralizing all of them in one place you won't
get unresolved calling errors. I've noticed this to be a source of many installation problems
over the years.
5) Modify Apache's httpd.conf
Add these three lines to the end of the file:
LoadModule php4_module "c:/windows/system32/php4apache2.dll"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
PHPIniDir "C:/php"
6) Make a copy of php.ini-recommended
Make a copy and call it c:\php.ini
7) Modify the php.ini file
To load extensions, uncomment those you want to use.
Specify the sendmail_from email address
8) Stop Apache and restart it
Most forget to do this! You must stop and restart to have the new settings take effect.
If it started with no errors, congrats.
If it had errors, you got trouble shooting to do.
9) Verify php is working
Create a file called phpinfo.php with your text editor
Call phpinfo() from within it:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
Create a MyTest website under Apache/Apache2/htdocs/MyTest
Store phpinfo.php in the MyTest directory
Surf to http://localhost/MyTest/phpinfo.php
with your browser
If you see Php info and all your extensions loaded, congrats.
If not, you got trouble shooting to do.
Hope this helps.
