It seems that prior to PHP 4.3.11 it was ok to not pass a second argument to
session_set_save_handler(). After upgrading to 4.3.11 I got the message:
session_set_save_handler(): Argument 2 is not a valid callback in ...
To fix the problem add a close function and pass it as the second argument to
session_set_save_handler(), as in the above example.
