note 54891 added to function.xml-parse-into-struct

Has anybody ever successfully tried to use this function while preserving potential comments within the actual XML file ? I'm specifically looking for a possibility to make some minor modifications to the XML file and then write it back - unfortunately, the comments are then removed, too. I'm thinking of writing my own function, would just like to know whether there's any direct way to accomplish this.
