when I type this code

$conn = mysql_connect("localhost", "username", "password");
echo $conn;
?>
it does not display the connection id in the browser, but when i go to the command prompt and access
mysql using the same username and password it connects me,
using MySQL v 4.0 PHP v 5.0 Apache 2.0
i have tried adding a port in the localhost but still no go
