Thanks for the tip with rtrim. There's something I discovered, though:
$retval = rtrim( $retval, '\0');
didn't work for me - instead I had to use
$retval = rtrim( $retval, "\0");
with the null ("\0") in double quotes. Hope this will prevent some headaches. :)
