sottwell's note about strchr being different from strstr is completely and totally in error.
They are identical. The following code:
$haystack = "test.this.txt";
echo strstr($haystack, ".") . "\n";
echo strchr($haystack, ".") . "\n";
produces this output:
.this.txt
.this.txt
