note 58058 added to function.ftp-put

Anybody have any idea why this weird behaviour occurs? My FTP upload form works perfectly, but every now and again I receive this: Warning: ftp_put(): php_connect_nonb() failed: Operation now in progress (36) in /public_html/portal.php on line 1394 Warning: ftp_put(): TYPE is now 8-bit binary in /public_html/portal.php on line 1394 If I wait a while and try again, everything works! Strange and very irritating.
