Hi, I'm writing this mail to explain my views on what I feel will make PEAR successful in the long run. Right now, there is a tendency of people "interfering" a bit too much in the work of others. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but please respect the fact that each package is a separate project, with its own developers, lead etc. The most important role of pear-dev is during the establishment of the package (finding a good name) and for discussion. As long as a package complies to the basic rules, its lead is not obligated to do what people on this list tell him. Neither is he obligated to collect opinions here before implementing something. Often it is a good idea to discuss topics on pear-dev to ensure interoperability, leverage others' experience and so on, but that is voluntary, and we should respect that. The reason I feel this way is that it is important for the developers of a package to have a feeling of ownership. The more interference they get from pear-dev, and the more decisions that they feel are taken for them by pear-dev, the less ownership the maintainers of a package will feel. If people don't feel ownership, they will have no emotional investment, and if they don't have other reasons to maintain the package (such as using it in a project at work etc.) the package may be orphaned if the developers are constantly bullied by pear-dev. Obviously I am exaggreating in the name of point-making, and the point I'm trying to make is: Please Respect Package Ownership. Without this, PEAR will not scale development-wise, it will end up having to be maintained by a small "elite" group of people, and will _not_ be able to keep up. Humility and respect never hurt anyone. - Stig -- Stig Sæther Bakken, Fast Search & Transfer ASA, Trondheim, Norway http://pear.php.net/wishlist.php/ssb
