I was getting checksum errors also, i think it has to do with the tar on windows platforms.
I had similar problems and I fixed them by enabling zlib in php, which makes packages come in tgz format instead of tar. I hope it solves this and maybe someone can have a more detailed look, my best bet would be to check Archive_Tar.
