Generating maps on demand can be a hard job as most often you don't
have the maps you need in digital form.
But you can generate your own maps based on raw, digital data-files
which are available for free on the net. Most often these datafiles are
available in the Arcinfo format which can be parsed quite easily if you
follow the E00 documentation [1].
Together with Jan Kneschke I am working on a new PEAR package that
renders geographical data in the Arcinfo/E00 format into images. At the
moment there are renderers available for GD (with PNG output, ...) and
SVG.
For example, the map in [2] was rendered using data freely available
from GIS-Datadepot [3]. The map shows the location of users in the
IRCNet channel #php.de.
I am not sure how to call the PEAR package, my favourite beeing
Image_GIS. The directory layout is as of now
<dir name="/" baseinstalldir="Image/GIS">
<dir name="Parser">
<file role="php" name="GD.php"/>
<file role="php" name="SVG.php"/>
</dir>
<dir name="Reader">
<file role="php" name="E00.php"/>
</dir>
<file role="php" name="Map.php"/>
<file role="php" name="Parser.php"/>
<file role="php" name="Renderer.php"/>
</dir>
