Conservatively, I would suggest 4.2.x at least for PEAR. As *officially* PEAR's
site (which lists the packages) was released along w/ PHP 4.3.0, that version
would be even better.
Some packages indicate the minimum version of PHP that they need to run, but
not all do. If you encounter one that does not have that information, either
contact the maintainer or submit a bug report (bugs.php.net). In that way the
package.xml (the package description file) will be updated to avoid this
problem in the future.
