while upgrading too old installed packages is ok most of the time, it
becomes a problem when
1) the installed version is too new (downgrade?!)
2) other packages/applications rely on an older version and are not
upward-compatible.

I saw a definition of the package versioning scheme used/suggested for PEAR
in one of the presentations. Can't find it atm.
Anyway, as I think the installation of more than one version of a package is
not to be supported by the pear command, I guess the best way to ship your
application is to have the required packages in the required versions
bundled with it.
