I haven't tested using the APP1 structures and parsing them. There is
another project that is being worked on by Sebastion that is a
full-fledge JPEG file parser written in pure PHP. The IPTC fields are
actually unrelated to the EXIF fields. EXIF is another standard geared
towards digital cameras. There is native support in PHP for extracting
this information using the exif_read_data() and exif_thumbnail()
functions. See,
