Well, generally it's not. But I think we shouldn't start a discussion
about all the good points of using a pear-class against using a non-
pear-class, right? But just some keyfeatures what using pear means
for me:
- class is easily available to anybody using php
- class is easy to install
- class is easy to keep up-to-date (since you can list / download /
install all pear-upgrades for the classes you have on your server)
- centralizes installs / updates / fixes on a "per-server"-base
instead of providing the class / module with every project again and
again
- ...
So if there are pear-packages available we really much prefer them
against other solutions if the packages fit our needs. And if they
don't you can easily think about contributing some improvements.
That's the way pear works in my eyes.
For sure there are other good libraries / modules / classes available
on the net - commercial as well as non-commercial - which already
provide the functionality we're looking for. But then you might as
well raise the question why the centralized pear-project was started -
and I'm damn sure you don't want to discuss this here :-)

I've already had a look at jpgraph, yes. It's one of those packages
you can use to do almost anything you can imagine. But on the other
hand it might be:
a) a bit overloaded if you just need basic graph-functionalitya
b and most important) it's not pear :-)
Also you might want to have a look at:
http://quimby.gnus.org/circus/chart/chart-manual.php
if you're interested. Also a very interesting and easy-to-use class.
We're planning to keep it that simple to draw graphs by just calling
a few easy-to-use functions.

For sure you can't seriously think about implementing a new jpgraph
for pear in the near future. But that's not the real intention behind
it - to offer ALL. Our primary goal at the moment would be to start
with drawing 2D-graphs (line-graphs, curves, maybe dot-graphs etc.)
as a first step. And if anybody would later send patches to also
implement 3d-charts etc. we'd really much appreciate cooperation of
the community.
What do the others think about it?
