Seems like mysql_select_db tries to connect as if with mysql_connect without arguments if you haven't already established a link. Perhaps your newer version of mysql requires a password. I would set up a user with the permissions you need to run your scripts and use mysql_connect or mysql_pconnect with the user name and password required. If you use mysql_pconnect, I believe you can switch dbs with mysql_select_db with the identifier returned by that call. Hope this helps.
