There are some other packages available in C.
IMHO it would be better to write a wrapper (it should work
faster than making graphs in PHP directly).
My propositions:
ploticus - GPL for Unix and Win32 (very nice, but unclean - uses global variables)

GDChart - another nice graphics library
(it has a perl module, then it should be easier to port it to php)
