I wanna use the nice MDB package for an application framework I'm working on. Because of the BC break from 1.x to 2.x, I'm not really happy at the moment :-( What should I do: Wait for a 2.x release oder start dev with 1.x ? Are there any plans for the 2.x release date? Does it make sense to take a current cvs-snapshot? Or will there be further changes text time?
I am sorry about the current situation. I guess the biggest problem with MDB 1.0 was that it started of with so much functionality that is rare for any package, so it needed a serious cleaning up. So what should you do now? I am not sure yet when I will release MDB 2.0. Basically I want to get the interbase/firebird, the mssql (and maybe frontbase) driver working so I can make a preview release of 2.0. The feedback I will get will determine how fast 2.0 will be released. After that preview release I will begin to backport some issues that I fixed in 2.0 that I think also need to be addressed in 1.x. After that release I want to get 2.0 out the door. So I am aiming for 2 months max. However there were quite a large number of changes made. So there might be new bugs in 2.0 :-/ What I will try to do ASAP is write up a little guide for 1.x users about how to minimize the efforts to port to 2.x. For the most part this should get people into safe water is most of the changes are either removing of methods for which there are better alternatives, renaming of a few methods and only in rare cases you need to change the parameters at all. One thing that was totally reworked is the LOB support. Thanks for that detailed information!
Ok, I think I'll start with the latest stable 1.x and will upgrade to 2.x as soon as there is a stable release. I like the separation in 2.x of (I call it) frontend and backend methods (create/alter). I think this will improve performance, because I only have to load/parse/execute code that I need. And I also love the abstraction of create/alter methods. I will use that heavily ;-) You did a very nice work, thanks a lot! Regards, Matthias
