Separate sequences are important for a number of reasons: 1) Often their are external factors driving the sequence assignment, such as a check number, or inventory tag number. 2) Sequences are often used as an audit mechanism to make sure that something strange isn't going on, or illegal entries going on. 3) GAAP practices require unique transaction numbers in AP, AR, and GL that are tied together 4) If you have one table with many records and another table with a few records, why require a number that's say 12 or fourteen digits when 4 digits would suffice. There are several other reasons. I agree that this should be one table...
