PEAR::DB is an abstraction layer for the native db functions. Abstraction
layers are always slower than the native functions. If you are concerned
about performance issues and you are sure that you will never have to
use another DBMS in your project, you are better of using the native
functions.
I for myself love PEAR::DB. To avoid performance loss when using
it, I use caching methods like the PEAR cache in order to win some
performance points at other critical areas in the project.

I think Stig once began to port some PEAR classes into C, but I don't
know how far he went. Stig?
