Hello,
there was some talking about how other packaging system handle different
versions.
I had a quick peek into gentoo's portage system.
Gentoo uses so called slots for their versioning.
From gentoos' website:
Portage handles different versions of the same installed programs.
If you would want, say GCC 2.95 and GCC 3.x installed at the same time, you
would specify the slot in each ebuild. i.e GCC 2.95 would be slot 0, and GCC
3.x would be slot 1.
Gentoo also depends on the packager defining a propper installpath which
don't collide
with older installations.
The benefit from the the slot system is IMHO that it don't relies on version
numbers on deciding
if a package should get replaced by a newer release or not.
