Sure, I mostly cuted & pasted the DB::assertExtension() method, and yesis silly to have the same repeated everywhere. But this and other things related to dependencies (this is a run-time dependency) needs to be discussed/implemented yet, or someone has started yet the effort? :-) I remember now, at least we have both php version comparing code in C (the Stig version_compare() php func for php 4.0.8) and in PHP (my PEAR::phpVersionIS()).
