have not tried installing 4.3.2 ( but will now :) ).
having the same problem installing php version 4.3.3.
Installing PEAR environment: /usr/local/lib/php/
PHP Parse error: parse error in
/export/install/php-4.3.3/pear/package-Archive_Tar.xml on line 1

Stop in /export/install/php-4.3.3 (line 267 of Makefile).
*** Error code 1
Stop in /export/install/php-4.3.3 (line 273 of Makefile).

after configure && make && make install compiling stops at this point
(php version 4.3.2 is ok):
