I tried that one first but it doesn't work either:
$ sudo /opt/php/bin/pear install http://pear.php.net/get/Validate-0.2.0
Password:
Package name 'http://pear.php.net/get/Validate-0.2.0'
not valid
however,
$ wget http://pear.php.net/get/Validate-0.2.0
$ sudo /opt/php/bin/pear install Validate-0.2.0
works fine. So it's just a problem with giving full urls to the install
command.

I'm already using 1.3b3..

this works, maybe I should have mentioned that in the original mail.
The problem is that it's not possible to install a package by giving a
full url to it, which makes it more troublesome to install a package
which is not part of pear.
